Introduction
This report presents an in-depth analysis of a recent field visit to Jamalpur District, undertaken to study rural livelihood, farming techniques, and community development efforts aimed at improving agricultural outcomes. Our journey started from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and was part of a broader initiative by World Vision, a global non-governmental organization (NGO) with deep roots in agricultural and social development programs. This visit was organized under World Vision’s JESMIN Program (Joint Effort for Sustainable Management in Nutrition and Income), which aims to uplift rural communities by improving agricultural productivity, promoting food safety, and empowering women in agriculture.
World Vision has been a key player in the global development arena since its establishment over a thousand years ago. This organization, in partnership with the Australian government, provides funding and resources, ensuring that development programs in rural communities continue to expand and flourish.
Funding cycles have been extended from 2018 to 2023, and due to the significant success of their programs, the initiative has been extended to 2028, which highlights the organization’s commitment to long-term, sustainable development.
Objectives of the JESMIN Program
The JESMIN program by World Vision has three primary objectives, focusing on the improvement of agricultural practices and overall community welfare in rural areas:
- Enhancement of Livelihood and Income through Technological Agriculture: By introducing advanced agricultural techniques and climate-smart practices, the program seeks to increase crop yields and farmer incomes. This objective involves teaching farmers about improved farming methods, using modern equipment, and managing resources more effectively to ensure resilience against environmental changes.
- Nutritional Security and Food Safety: The program aims to ensure a stable and nutritious food supply for communities, which is essential for promoting good health and reducing malnutrition. By focusing on food safety and security, JESMIN helps rural families gain access to safe, healthy food, building a foundation for better physical and economic health.
- Empowerment of Women in Agriculture: Recognizing the role women play in agriculture, JESMIN is dedicated to empowering them by providing resources, training, and support. By involving women in agricultural activities and decision-making processes, the program works to increase their independence, income opportunities, and societal roles within their communities.
Scope of World Vision’s Work in Jamalpur
World Vision operates across four upazilas (sub-districts) in Jamalpur District, with a network impacting more than 4,000 local farmers. The organization has set up 450 farming groups, each consisting of 25-30 members, to foster a collaborative learning environment. These groups support knowledge sharing and resource allocation, making it easier for farmers to adopt and sustain new farming practices.
The JESMIN program focuses on cultivating seven value chain crops that have been identified as crucial for both economic value and nutritional quality. These crops include rice, maize, leafy vegetables, chili, tomato, and mustard, which are cultivated using climate-resilient, sustainable techniques.
The program also emphasizes Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), which is essential in helping rural farmers cope with climate variability and extreme weather events. By training farmers to use water efficiently, optimize crop rotations, and adopt soil conservation methods, World Vision aims to build resilience against environmental stressors, ensuring stable crop yields even in challenging climatic conditions.
Women’s Empowerment and Health Initiatives
One of the standout features of World Vision’s approach in Jamalpur is its focus on women’s health and empowerment. This includes educational programs that address maternal health, pregnancy counseling, and nutritional support for women and children.
The organization’s efforts in women’s empowerment go beyond agricultural training, with initiatives designed to foster community leadership and economic independence among women. Training and resources allow women to contribute significantly to agriculture, improving household incomes and creating a more inclusive and resilient community structure.
Economic Empowerment Through Market Access and Crop Marketing
World Vision provides training and resources for farmers to improve their marketing systems, helping them find better market channels for selling their produce. By connecting farmers with buyers and providing training on market negotiation and distribution techniques, JESMIN enables farmers to secure fair prices for their crops and avoid exploitation by middlemen. The establishment of reliable market linkages allows farmers to maximize their profits and make a sustainable living from agriculture.
Field Observations and Farmer Interactions
Throughout our visit, we engaged directly with farmers who were participating in the JESMIN program. They reported significant improvements in their farming techniques, crop yields, and overall income. The farmers also highlighted how the adoption of climate-smart techniques has made their crops more resilient to seasonal fluctuations, securing their livelihoods even in adverse conditions. Many women farmers shared that the program had not only boosted their skills and economic contributions but also elevated their roles in the family and community. This shift in social dynamics is creating a more inclusive and supportive environment within the rural population of Jamalpur.
The Role of Value Chain Crops in Economic Growth
The JESMIN program’s emphasis on value chain crops ensures that farmers focus on high-demand, profitable crops, which maximizes their economic returns. By concentrating efforts on seven value chain crops, World Vision is able to streamline resources, provide focused training, and help farmers achieve economies of scale. This strategic approach strengthens local economies, supports sustainable growth, and contributes to food security.
Challenges and Future Directions
Despite its successes, the program faces several challenges, including:
- Limited access to advanced farming equipment.
- Vulnerability to climate change, which can disrupt crop cycles.
- Economic barriers for small-scale farmers who struggle to adopt new practices without additional support.
However, with the program’s extension to 2028 and its continued funding from Australia, World Vision is in a strong position to address these challenges. Further investments in modern agricultural technology, climate resilience, and resource access are likely to improve outcomes even more for Jamalpur’s farming communities.
